2024
Digitalism is more than an exhibition—it is defining a moment in art history.
By presenting some of the best artists (‘digitalists’) working at the forefront of art and technology today, we are formally recognising Digitalism as a distinct new art movement, sitting alongside
the very best of Modern British and Contemporary traditional art at the British Art Fair.

This exhibition serves as a critical platform to contextualise and codify Digitalism, providing
a narrative that traces its development and highlights its cultural significance. Through this
exhibition, we aim to cement Digitalism’s place within the broader history of art, ensuring
that its contributions are acknowledged and studied for generations to come.

The Creative Technology Gallery:
Immersive Experience Art

This space is dedicated to moving image works, where artists explore the boundaries of time, motion, and storytelling through linear digital media.
These works transform the environment around you, immersing you in a rich tapestry of visual and auditory experiences. Expansive, high-definition projections turn the walls into vibrant, moving canvases that draw you into the heart of the artwork, with many works incorporating carefully designed sound elements that enhance the visual experience, creating a multi-sensory atmosphere.

The selection spans a broad spectrum—from abstract, non-representational works focusing on form, colour, and movement, to narrative-driven pieces
that explore personal, social, or global themes.

Ghosts of the Present (2024) - 1 min

£5,000 Edition of 10

Ghosts of the Present  by Shahwali Shayan is a hypnotic self-portrait rendered through an immersive experience that utilises a rotating point cloud system, creating a mesmerizing dance of light and sound. As part of the Ghosts series, this piece captures the fluidity of identity, dissolving the boundaries between past, present, and future. The points of light appear to coalesce and disperse in an endless motion, encouraging the viewer to lose themselves in a contemplative and meditative reflection on the self, that feels simultaneously intimate and abstract.

This self-portrait embodies a sense of continuous transformation. The rotational movement of the point cloud speaks to the dynamic process of becoming, where each moment reveals new facets of one’s identity. In this hypnotic cycle, the boundaries between physical and digital, inner and outer worlds, dissolve into a singular experience. The image constantly shifts and rotates leaving the viewer unsure of which direction they are facing — much like the experience of navigating identity in a world that demands conformity.

Through Ghosts of the Present, the act of self-representation becomes an immersive journey rather than a static reflection. Ghosts of the Present invites viewers to engage with selfhood in a non-linear way, where memory, perception, and time intersect. By immersing in the flow of points, the viewer is gently guided into an exploration of presence — where they can consider not just what it means to exist in the moment, but how identity is shaped by both internal and external forces. The act of self-representation becomes an immersive journey.

Passeri Polyphony is an immersive experience portraying a shocking reality about the state of our planet: the once vast orchestra of life, the soundscape of the natural world, is falling silent. The project invites audiences to engage with a living data visualisation – an emergent Murmuration of 17000 flying aud

io-waveforms that statistically represent 17 of the UK‘s most endangered songbird species. Based on the population development of these species from 1967 to 2020, it makes visible and audible how the soundscape of birdsongs in the UK has dramatically changed over time. Passeri Polyphony combines innovative ways of data processing, audio visualisation, and particle simulations into a unique artistic approach to communicating ecological urgency. Part of a series of projects at the intersection of immersive art, science communication, and environmental advocacy, it aims to leverage the full creative potential of new-media storytelling, to expand realities and reawaken the connection to the world around us.

PROCREATION: Adam and Eve
(2024) - 2 min

£3000 Diptych version (unframed)
£4100 (framed) Edition of 5

'A man and a woman appear at each end of a space and stand motionless not understanding why they are there, as they contemplate each other’s form. Slowly they begin to walk toward each other. The woman holds something, when they meet she offers it to the man, then momentarily they merge into one another. They part and walk away from each other, neither understanding what they have just done...' The viewer stands between the left and right hand screens so that the figures of Adam and Eve walk toward, then seem to pass through us as they couple, suggestive of we how are all supposedly born of these two people, and thus we being there at the moment of our conception. The apple is passed from Eve to Adam, then perpetually hovers between them reminding them of their actions.

What does it mean to be human in screen-based living? In the intersection of physicality and virtuality, where newly adopted automatisms are extending humans’ ability to navigate and perceive spaces. These objects, designed with screens and windows to our digital world, defines our digital identity, and too often, extends into our physical existence; redefining what it means to be human, feeding into crucial discourses of human metaphysics, philosophy and the duality of technology.

Our digital identities are better connected than ever, but the more we devote to immersing ourselves in virtuality, the less important our physical humanity becomes in defining who we are. Abstract human forms move, see and touch, aware and agile in a digital world – can their corporeality be denied? We do not critique: we simply observe.
